The list is ordered by how much documented water history turned up for each area during research, not by a flood-risk rating. “No area-specific event found” means only that: this site did not find a published report naming that neighborhood. It is not a statement that the area is safe. FEMA flood maps and the county offices are the places to check a specific lot.
Addicks to the North, Barker to the South
The Harris County Flood Control District lists Bear, Horsepen, Langham and South Mayde creeks as the main waterways into Addicks Reservoir, a watershed of 138 square miles. Mason Creek and upper Buffalo Bayou drain into Barker Reservoir, 126 square miles. Much of the Katy area sits upstream of one or the other.
During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, water rising behind both dams flooded homes upstream of them. In 2020 Community Impact reported a federal court finding the Army Corps of Engineers responsible for that upstream flooding, which it said affected about 10,000 properties.
No yard drain changes any of that. It is context for why some of the area pages below say more about limits than about fixes.
