French drains on a Katy lot
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe in it. Water in the saturated soil moves into the gravel, into the pipe, and along the pipe to somewhere lower. On this prairie the hard part is the last three words.
A Path Out for Water in the Ground
The trench is lined with filter fabric so the surrounding soil does not clog the gravel. The pipe sits near the bottom with its holes set to collect water, and it has to slope the whole way to its outlet. The trench is backfilled with gravel and often capped with soil and sod.
It is built for the water you cannot see: the saturated upper soil that keeps a lawn soft. It is a poor tool for a sheet of water standing on top of hard ground, which is a catch basin’s job.
Where Does the Pipe Go?
The USDA description of the Katy soil series gives slopes of 0 to 3 percent, most under 1 percent. A pipe needs steady fall to move water, and on ground that flat a long run can run out of height before it reaches anything lower. Common outlets are the street curb, a rear swale, or a pop-up emitter in a lower part of the yard.
Three outlets are off the table: the house sewer, the neighbor’s yard, and anywhere that simply moves the puddle. A contractor should be able to show you the fall, start to finish, before the trench opens.
Street curb
Usually the lowest point for a front yard. The city or county may have rules about cutting or coring a curb; ask whose curb it is.
Rear swale or easement
Common in production subdivisions. The water has to join the path the lot was built to use.
Pop-up emitter
A cap in the lawn that opens when water pushes up. Only works if the emitter sits lower than the whole run.
What Lives in the Same Strip of Yard
A side yard in a Katy subdivision is a crowded place: gas and electric service, cable, the water line, and usually a run of sprinkler pipe. Texas811 asks for two business days’ notice before any excavation, and the call is free. Sprinkler pipe will not be marked by a utility, so show the contractor where the heads are.

If the trench crosses the irrigation system, the drainage crew works around it. Moving, cutting or repairing those lines is licensed irrigator work under the TCEQ, and the City of Katy lists lawn irrigation systems among work that needs a permit.
What a French Drain Will Not Do
- Keep water out of the yard when the street and the creek are already full.
- Fix a lot that sits lower than every possible outlet, unless the water is pumped.
- Replace grading: if the ground slopes toward the house, the drain is fighting the grade every storm.
- Last forever without the fabric; soil fines are what end most failed drains.
