Two Storms That Named Old Katy Streets

April 18, 2016. Community Impact reported 75 water rescues in the city, water coming across Morton Road, and flooding along 10th Street, the northern end of Avenue D and Magnolia Street.

July 8, 2024, Hurricane Beryl. At 9 a.m. the City of Katy listed eight high-water locations, among them Avenue D at 13th Street, the Katy City Park area, and First Street at Pin Oak Road.

Those are street and neighborhood events. When the streets are under water, yard drains have nowhere to empty, and no lot-level work changes that. What a yard fix can do is make sure the lot sheds ordinary storms quickly and keeps water off the slab when the street is merely busy rather than full.

The City has adopted the 2021 International Residential Code, including its call for ground to fall 6 inches in the first 10 feet from a foundation.
The City’s Public Works Department is responsible for drainage, streets and the public right-of-way.

Older Lots

What Is Different About the Old Town

Old Katy has the town’s oldest houses, and older houses here include pier-and-beam construction as well as slabs. On a pier-and-beam house, water that ponds under the floor is worth pointing out to the contractor. On any older lot, decades of added beds, walks and fences have usually reshaped the grade more than in a newer subdivision.
