Yard drainage in Cimarron
One of the older subdivisions in the Katy area, built in the 1970s in unincorporated Harris County. Its street drainage was rebuilt recently. Its yards were not.
What Changed Under the Streets
Covering Katy News reported on May 3, 2024 that Cimarron had received $13.5 million in flood control upgrades: larger drainage pipes, more capacity at the curb inlets, and adjustments to water and sewer lines. Funding came from the Harris County flood bond (about $6.88 million), Municipal Utility District 81 (about $6.35 million) and Cornerstones MUD ($270,000).
The same report said 162 homes in Cimarron flooded during Hurricane Harvey, and that the neighborhood was built to drainage standards different from today’s.

Bigger Pipes at the Curb, Same Grade Behind the House
A street system with more capacity gives yard water a better place to go, especially for lots that drain to the front. It does nothing for a backyard that slopes toward the house, a side yard blocked by a fence, or beds built up against the slab over fifty years.
On a lot this age, expect the walk-through to find several small causes rather than one big one. Downspouts, raised beds and settled soil along the wall are the usual starting points.
- Street inlet clogged or ponding at the curb: the utility district or county, not a contractor.
- Water pooling in the yard or against the house: a drainage contractor.
- Sprinkler lines in the way: a licensed irrigator.
